Woodrow Wilson Center Press and Stanford University Press have published my new book, Two Suns In the Heavens: The Sino-Soviet Struggle for Supremacy, 1962-1967. The book argues that the Sino-Soviet alliance collapsed because it was intrinsically unequal - something that was recognized by both sides. But if the Soviet leaders accepted this situation as entirely natural, the Chinese were unhappy with their second-rank position in this Soviet-invented system of coordinates. The Sino-Soviet split happened when China attempted to reassert true independence in foreign policy and the Soviets were determined to keep the status quo unchanged.
